Fair Hill International Horse Trials, Elkton, Maryland. May 27, 2001

Memorial Day weekend brought two days of competition with very different weather but with similar successful results. In Saturday’s pouring rain, Courtney rode Candycane Rain to a 2nd-place finish in his first Preliminary Level event. “Candy” performed well in the dressage and then added a clean jumping cross country round and a solid show jumping round to take home a red ribbon.

Courtney also rode Toymaster at the Training Level, putting in an excellent dressage test and a clean cross country round. As the rain continued, Courtney joined the rest of the riders in the “Young Horse” division in choosing not to compete in the show jumping.

Sunday dawned with clearer skies and Jennifer Burg riding Partner in Crime at the Training Level and Anna Toomey on Zozimus at the Novice Level. Jenn and “Partner” put in solid performances in all three phases to earn her second ribbon in as many events placing 6th. Anna and “Zoso,” who was competing in his first horse show of any kind, also produced good results in all three phases with no faults on either cross country or show jumping, finishing in 2nd place.
